However, cats are highly intelligent, and can be trained to carry out a number of processes. When training cats, one thing that you must keep in mind is that they do not have a pack instinct like dogs. While they can live together with other cats, they don't have a true pack mentality. While the cat has often been given a reputation of being aloof, self sufficient, and asocial, this is largely dependent on the breed. Many breeds such as the Bengal are exceptionally social.
In general, if most cats are socialized as kittens, they will be affectionate and close to their owners throughout the course of their lives. While cats can be trained to carry out tricks similar to dogs, this is considered to be somewhat rare. At the same time, a cat can be taught to operate a wide variety of basic devices, and one good example of this is a sink faucet. Once a cat is trained to carry out a certain task, the cat can either do it by itself, or it can perform the task when given the signal by its owner/trainer. While it will take some effort and patience, an owner can teach the cat to carry out a number of different tasks.
Some of these tasks include having the cat get off the furniture by itself, or calling the cat to dinner. However, it must be emphasized that even though the cat is intelligent, it is not as easy to train as a dog, simply because cats have a tendency to be stubborn, and they will not easily cooperate. Some cat owners think that the reason cats are difficult to train is because cats are naturally loners. In the wild, a cat's need to survive is not based on its ability to work together with other cats. The cat has a high degree of self sufficiency, and though it may be affectionate towards its owner, its self sufficiency may make it hard to train.
Perhaps one of the most important forms of training a cat can receive is litter box training. By teaching a cat how to use the litter box, the cat won't feel the need to use the bathroom in an unwanted place. Litter box training is a necessity, especially for house cats. In fact, some cat owners avoid using a litter box and simply train the cat how to use the toilet itself. While it is very possible to train cats, it requires a great deal of time and patience, much more so than dogs. However, it could be said that while cats are challenging to train, it can be much more rewarding for an owner who successfully does it.
