Life can be cruel in the wild, but some of Mother Nature's castoffs and owners prized pets find a second chance at numerous veterinary rehabilitation clinics throughout the United States. From wheel chairs individually designed for dogs to prosthetic limbs on elephants and dolphins, science is helping these animals live a normal life. Pet rehabilitation has become as good as human rehabilitation and will only get better.
Wheelchairs are commonly used by pets that have difficulty or are unable to walk on their own due to paralysis, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, arthritis, spinal cord trauma, disc disease, amputation or other conditions that affect the rear legs. With the help of a pet wheelchair, pets are able to enjoy many of their favorite activities including walking, running, and playing fetch.
Casts on various animals are very common in veterinary medicine today. It is estimated that over one million casts will be applied to various pets and animals in 2007 and over 90% of those animals will make a full recovery. In order to diagnose a broken bone, veterinarians utilize conventional x-ray machines, CAT scans and MRI scans which were traditionally reserved for humans. As technology continues to increase, the animal and pet world is receiving the benefits similar to humans of the medical advancements.
Pets and animals suffering from various injuries including broken bones, joint pains, and arthritis are being rehabilitated in the same fashion as many humans and athletes are being rehabilitated. The dog in the above picture was the victim of a hit and run accident in which he suffered a broken leg, broken ribs and a punctured lung. After wearing a cast and being immobilized for six weeks, the dog needed a low impact workout to increase muscle strength. Walking in water has long been used by athletes for rehabilitation of these types of injuries.
Animals can be born with genetic defects just like humans that would cause a loss of limb. Others may also loose a limb from amputation just like a human would. Either way, the animal must learn to adapt to it's loss, or if the animal is domesticated, many veterinarians have created prosthetics to help the animal live a normal life. The prosthetics have been found to be a very beneficial part in the animals life and many animals have lived long full lives with a reduced level of stress.
