Rats are very commonly kept as pets by small children. Rats are for those people who can easily afford a suitable cage and certain other accessories. But most important of all, veterinary care should be affordable if ever the need arises. Rats also need weekly or twice weekly cleaning out, and giving them out time and general love will not be too bad.
Rats can be very destructive if left to roam freely. There should be a rat free area where you ought to keep them. They will chew wires, books, furniture, or anything else that looks chewable, and generally, expensive. Also, rats can be difficult to keep if anyone in the household suffers from asthma or allergy. Also, some one will be needed to take care of rats when your family goes out on holiday or something. Rats generally do not live for more than 2 to 3 years.
Rats should at least be kept in pair of single sex. They are extremely social and need company of their own kind. In the most active of household, rats will be let out of their cage for not more than a couple of hours. This means that they have to spend a lot of time in their cage and this can be very lonely. They tend to spend a lot of time sleeping, and most of their remaining time in grooming.
Rats are very friendly towards humans and bite very rarely. They also learn their names and many other tricks. People generally keep rats in group of three as a precaution if one of the rats dies. Most decent cages for rats are generally rabbit cages. So don’t go looking for “rat cagesâ€. Terenziani cage is very popular for rats. Canova and Michelangelo cages are used if you are having a couple of rats. Bigger cages like Moore and Rodin are also available.
Sometimes fish tanks are also used for housing rats, but it is not recommended because of lack of proper ventilation. You will also need a career for your rat, even when they grow up. It is very useful in transporting the rats. Bedding for rats can be provided by shavings, shredded paper, shredded cardboard, hemp, paper based cat litter, straw and hay.
Many stores also have a wide array of cage toys and accessories. Some of the very useful accessories are Igloos, Tubes, Hammocks, Plant Pots, Tube treats, wheels, Branches from fruit trees and pea fishing. For feeding rats, one must properly notice what the rat likes and what it doesn’t like. The feeding habits should be set accordingly. Rats can make a great pet if properly taken care of. They should always be treated as living creatures with feelings.

i had a rat he passed away last year i do have to say never keep 2 males in the same cage they will fight if you have 2 rats in one cage have 2 females or a male and female you can get the male fixed at your vet if they offer exotic pet care since not every vet can there is a risk in doing that since they are so small so going under could kill them. Also do not use wheels it will bind there spine and can kill them

yea so did my cat blackie but she died about 2 years ago of old age. Blackie would bring the rats to the door and leave them there for us.
