Pleo is a 'designer species' type of pet robot. He incorporates all the basic traits of autonomous life. He is specifically engineered and enhanced to mimic life and relate to his owner on a personal level. Pleo is equipped with senses for sight, sound, and touch. He learns as he explores his environment. He will exhibit genuine reactions to sensory stimuli. Every Pleo begins life with certain tendencies but interaction with his environment has subtle effects on his behavior. Every Pleo eventually exhibits a unique personality. Pleo is capable of expression. He can feel joy and sorrow, anger and annoyance. When Pleo is tired, he will become drowsy and go to sleep—even dream. Two or more Pleos will recognize one another. Be careful though. They can transmit colds to each other.
Unlike industrial robots, "Mental Commitment Robots" are developed to interact with human beings and to make them feel emotional attachment to the robots. Rather than using objective measures, these robots trigger more subjective evaluations, evoking psychological impressions such as "cuteness" and comfort. Mental Commitment Robots are designed to provide 3 types of effects: psychological, such as relaxation and motivation, physiological, such as improvement in vital signs, and social effects such as instigating communication among inpatients and caregivers.
iCat is a plug & play desktop user-interface robot that is capable of mechanically rendering facial expressions. This capability makes the robot ideal for studying human-robot interaction. The robot has been made available by Philips Research (Eindhoven, the Netherlands) to stimulate research in this area further and in particular to stimulate research topics such as social robotics, human-robot collaboration, joint-attention, gaming, and ambient intelligence.
