Many people seek the comfort and companionship of a pet, however cannot find the time to care for, feed and nurture the live animal. Pet robots with artificial intelligence may serve as a good replacement for these people. Pet robots have many of the senses, abilities to recognize and reason, emotions and stimulation needs of live pets. Following is a look at the popular pet robots on the market.

Pleo

Pleo is a 'designer species' type of pet robot. He incorporates all the basic traits of autonomous life. He is specifically engineered and enhanced to mimic life and relate to his owner on a personal level. Pleo is equipped with senses for sight, sound, and touch. He learns as he explores his environment. He will exhibit genuine reactions to sensory stimuli. Every Pleo begins life with certain tendencies but interaction with his environment has subtle effects on his behavior. Every Pleo eventually exhibits a unique personality. Pleo is capable of expression. He can feel joy and sorrow, anger and annoyance. When Pleo is tired, he will become drowsy and go to sleep—even dream. Two or more Pleos will recognize one another. Be careful though. They can transmit colds to each other.

Paro

Unlike industrial robots, "Mental Commitment Robots" are developed to interact with human beings and to make them feel emotional attachment to the robots. Rather than using objective measures, these robots trigger more subjective evaluations, evoking psychological impressions such as "cuteness" and comfort. Mental Commitment Robots are designed to provide 3 types of effects: psychological, such as relaxation and motivation, physiological, such as improvement in vital signs, and social effects such as instigating communication among inpatients and caregivers.

iCat

iCat is a plug & play desktop user-interface robot that is capable of mechanically rendering facial expressions. This capability makes the robot ideal for studying human-robot interaction. The robot has been made available by Philips Research (Eindhoven, the Netherlands) to stimulate research in this area further and in particular to stimulate research topics such as social robotics, human-robot collaboration, joint-attention, gaming, and ambient intelligence.

Aibo

Your artificial intelligent companion by Sony. Unfortunately, Sony decided to discontinue its production: "Following the Sony Corporation FY05 3Q announcement, the production of AIBO Entertainment Robots has been discontinued as of end March 2006. As for the sales activity, we will discontinue the sales of AIBO once all remaining stock runs out."

PaPeRo

The PaPeRo has been researched and developed with the intention of its being a partner with human beings and its being able to live together with them. For this reason, it has various basic functions for the purpose of interacting with people.

Pleo is the best! I've been following it since they posted those first videos as a preview of the product. The price is not in my range unfortunately. I don't blame them for it though. Such an amazing invention deserves the price. Plus... in just a month of two you would save that cost from the lack of food, medical expenses and pet insurance cost which a real pet would need.
