Hmmmm....When I was at that age I really wanted to have a cat as a pet. I loved cats ever since I was a small child.

If your kid wants to have a hamster, then just buy him one. Just make sure you tell him his responsibilities before buying it.

If he wants a hamster then it's okay to get him one. Just make sure he knows how to take care of it.

And also, tell him what you expect him to do and not to do with the hamster and the resposibilities behind.

The cat could still kill the rabbit, depending on the cat's personality, skill, and desire.

The hamster will take less space, and can be placed in one of those exercise globes while out of the cage, which will keep the cat from eating him.

Of course, a hamster in a globe might still serve as a cat toy.

We have a seven year old boy, plus two other children :)

I would not get him a hamster, unless I decided that I would do the work.
A child that age cannot really take care of a rodent.

They can feed it but that's about it.

Plus, a bunny or a guinea pig would be even more work.

We got our son some great looking fish.
And our daughter who is ten has a hamster.

Everybody is happy :)

I have a 6 year old as well, and no, a 6 year old is not going to take care of an animal whatever it is. My boy has a dog that sleeps at the foot of his bed, protecting him.

I have 2 rabbits and their nor cheap or easy to take care of. They are as much work as a puppy. And if you think your son can't take care of hamster he surly CANNOT take care of a rabbit. Rabbits requrer regular vet vists, Spaying\neutering operatoin (Very costly), will be agresive if not spayed and don't even thing of brining them in the house because the'll chew everything. And rember rabbits are Lagamorphs NOT rodents! Also 1 more thing: rabbits need daily exercise. And I don't recommend rabbits with small children because rabbits have very fradgile back bones and can breack when droped.

I think fish maybe. Or a rabbit. I don't think 6 year old's are responsible enough to take care of pets. Will you be helping him?

I know a 14 year old who can't seem to take care of her pets. That said, you should get a pet that you will enjoy taking care of and let the 6 year old think it is his. Then it is a win win thing. Ok, I am off to help mommy take care of sissy's rat.

Untill next time.....Buck

I think a great pet for him would be a rat, fish, or turtle. I KNOW a 6 year old boy CANNOT take care of a rabbit. It is a about a 10 year job. And a 6 year old boy could easliy spoke a rabbit into shock. They honistliy arn't good pets for children under age 10 or 11.

In my opinion, 6 year olds aren't responsible enough to care by a pet by HIMSELF. But if you help him, it should be fine.

i have a 7 yr old that takes care of his own pony..i think that if he can do that then your son could care for a hamster...just make sure he knows how to change its food, water and bedding on a regular basis and know everything about them. i wouldnt get him a rabbit, my sister had one when we were younger and he was a big pain, but also know that hamsters do get loose very easily so make sure he is in a secure cage.

My two sons one is 6 and the other is now 2, when my 6 was about 4 or 5 he had goldfish, which he had at my parents house since I didnt have a fish tank well unfortunetly the poor things died one day. He had been staying the night and my mother didnt get up with him and he took it in his cute lil head to try and play with them. You can see how they died :( needless to say we dont have fish in my house dont need another accident like that. I would have to say if you want to get a child a pet make sure you the parent wont have an issue taking care of it most of the time, but let the child know what you want them to do to help take care of the animal (unlike my parents with the fish). Both my boys totally think that our dog is theirs, but Im the one that takes care of him the 6 yr old does have to make sure he has food and water and help clean up after the puppy and the 2 yr tires to help :) my suggestion however is if you want a pet for your son make sure you will be able to help him learn how to take care of it and to make sure he and the animal are both safe.

The love of a pet cant be measured by any means
