My older cat has her days! Some days she is really nice to the kittens and some day she is a miserable animal. I try to get them involved in the same thing- Play with them together, etc. I'm tired of Gracie (older cat) swiping at the kittens and trying to knock them around. She isn't playing- it's like the look of kill. Any suggestions on how to make her nicer. |

Could it be she is jealous? Maybe she feels like her territory is being invaded. My older cat was like that with my younger cat for a while, but now they play when my older cat wants too. She still has her moments when she just isn't in the mood. How long have the kittens been there?

If she's really getting on she might just want her space. I have a twenty year old cat who is on her last legs, she does not like the two year old around. I am not going to force it either-she's earned the right to some peace.

It won't take long for new cats to become friends. It's all natural that they will fight at first, but as time goes by they will eventually become very good friends. :)

I'm watching my roommates new kitten and my sister's older cat not get along right now... I had no idea my sister's cat had this side in her but, everytime the kitten comes near she growls, hisses, or swats at her. They have played here and there but, for the most part, I think the older cat just needs more time to figure this new little creature out. I'm sure it's the same with yours.
I wouldn't worry about Gracie "swiping them around" as you say. I'm sure they can hold their own. The only time I would intervene is if she is actually hurting them...

I disagree jhellie-its been two years and there has been no change in our cats. She's too old and too set in her ways, simple as that.

My cat is an older one but she took to the younger cat after a while. Of course not all cats are like mine. I agree many get set in their ways over time.

Thinking about how the cat feels reminds me of myself.
I am ok with children for a limited amount of time, like while I am working with them at schools, but, since my kids are grown, don't want them in my home on the weekends at all. I worked hard to get adulthood installed in my home and don't want to change that at all.
The cat is probably feeling the same way.
She has reached the age where she doesn't want to think about kittens, doesn't want them trying to enlist her in their play, and doesn't want that noise and busy-ness around.
That isn't going to change, and it shouldn't be expected to change.
She's the queen, let her reign!

If I were you I would seporate them for a while and then try to re-intoduce them to each other. That's what I do when my dogs or bunnies fight. It proably won't last long. I would keep them away from each other for a day or two.
