I have 2 female dogs (3 and 4 yrs old). They only do their business in our side yard. I can take them on walks for hours and they do not relieve themselves. This makes it very tough for us to take them away on weekends as they will not relieve themselves while on a leash. I have to find a safe spot where I cantake them off leash. Does anybody have any suggestions. My husband and I have been very patient and will take turns walking them for hours (even after 12 hours of sleeping), they will NOT relieve themselves until they are taken off leash. Thanks in advance! |

Perhaps it could be anxiety. If you find the source of what makes them anxious you may be able to circumvent the problem.

I have heard bits and pieces of this here and there. From what I gather, a dog going potty is kind of like us. You don't want someone "holding" you while you poop! They feel more free to do there business while off the leash, just as you do with the door closed. It is just something most dogs do. As far as correcting this action I would go with the patient, understanding mindset of "it is going to take a minute". You can try putting them on the leash when you let them out to go poop. Walking with a loose leash to where ever they decide to squat. This will get them used to pooping on a leash because when they are barking at the door asking to go outside, you know they have to and will go to the bathroom. Then there will be no choice but to go on a leash.
Hope this helps

we found teh most aesome thing. Its a traveling pen for babies. Its a small set of panels, about teh size of baby gates that hoolk together. IOts makes apen 6X6 big enough for a baby to go and come back in. It collapses into a carryting handle too. Its expensive about 70 bucks but its a great item.
