I know back in the day my Shepherd was very bad mannered but then we started using treats when she was good and she has had a major turn around. She typically only like either homemade Peanut butter dog cookies or the plain MilkBone dog bones. For my cats though they get a bit of goats milk or wet food if they behave (stay off counters play nice etc) What do you use? |

It was strange but my Dalmatians when I was young would get CARROTS!! They LOOOVED them, They would always run run run to the fridge when someone opened it and stick there nose on the bottom crisper drawer and try to get the carrots. Dogs love food and I believe as long as you give them the same treat (no matter what it is) all the time for doing good things it will associate it's self with good behavior.

My cats have always loved cheese as their main treat, but the old lady can't have it any more. Though honestly I have never really had much success with 'training' them, they just do what they want to.
ThePetGuy
Sounds like most cats, very independent! I would not suggest cheese for a large animal like a dog, for two reasons. The cheese will upset there digestive system(you don't want to smell that!) but not only making gas but could harm there health as well, same with chocolate...VERY BAD for dogs.

I love giving rewards to my pet dog. My dog loves food that's why I feed her all the time. Sometimes I bring my dogs in the park to jog with me. Yesterday, I bought a new dog collar that best fits for her.

I think the rewards should include some type of treat, but not only.
Physical affection and play are awesome rewards also.
My dog used to enjoy a pep talk ALMOST as much as a little piece of sausage :)

Well, as my pet is a fish, I give it fresh and live worms! All it has to do to earn its favorite food is by swimming gracefully in the aquarium!
ThePetGuy
I bet it earns it's favorite treat allot huh?

I have these little fish treats that I give to my cats and my dog loves chicken so I try and cook hime some chicken about once a week when we have it.

I'm actually not sure that its ok for cats even, in large amounts. I believe that cats are lactose intolerant, which is why they are supposed to drink water, not milk.
However there is a lower amount of lactose in cheese, and so in small amounts for treats, it should be ok. They never had a lot, but believe me, they hear the plastic bag and you should see them come running!

I do not use food as rewards, but rather reward with extra cuddles and making a happy fuss over them.

our babies are treated like members of the family. They get treats all the time because they are all good boys and girls.
Favorites are Beef ribs. we grill em and then save them in a bag in the fridge.
Little Debbie Oatmeal cream pies
Rawhide bones
Pig ears
Ice cream! for when they have been exceptional.

Oh....we all like goodies! Mommy bought us our own cookie jar. It is red with paw prints on it and a dog bone looking handle on top. It is in plain view next to the coffee pot. She buys us special cookies from petco and we love them. All mommy or daddy have to say is "Who wants a cookie?" and all four of us line up for those wonderfull treats. When mommy or daddy is working with us at either learning new tricks or working as therapy dogs, we have a different kind of treat. They carry a small pouch full of little bone shaped treats which they give us when we do the trick right. We also get lots of love and praise when we do things right which makes us want to do it all the more. We don't get people food though. Mommy does not want us to beg at the table or take food that does not belong to us. She also does not want us to eat stuff that might make us sick.
