Need help with my new Apple Ipod

Very off topic but I just bought an Ipod so how do I download songs from CDs? And are 'free music' downloads illegal? I want to download a CD but I donno how, please help, I have had it for a few days now, I really wanna use it bc. I am going to a field trip with my son's classs and they said I could bring one,
