Hello everyone,

I'm new here and hopefully I put this message in the right place. I need help finding a way to get my puppy back. My cousin stole her 4 days ago, after she already said that I could have the pup 8 months ago.

I must explain how this started, so that you don't get confused about why I don't have the pup's papers or anything. My cousin moved down here to live with grandparents, and they didn't want a pup that wasn't house-broken in their home, so my cousin asked if my family and I would care for her. We agreed, but we were never told how long we'd have to dog-sit. We were never compensated, never were we thanked, it was difficult getting in touch with my cousin, and it was about 2-3 wks. before we finally heard from her. You must understand that my cousin doesn't like animals, doesn't like dogs - she wanted the pup so she could be the next Paris Hilton, and because she got the pup for X-mas. She's never bought any food from the day she bought the pup until the day she stole her. She just always had other people watch the pup while she hung out with her friends and partied.

Knowing all these facts about my cousin, on top of the fact that she seemed not to care for the puppy (didn't call to check on the pup even after 3 wks.), we decided just to ask her if she'd be willing to give us the puppy. To make this already-long story short, she agreed and we had the puppy for 8 months. 1 month ago my cousin said she wanted her back, but we refused. I love the puppy very much, and she was very happy here...never had to starve again or be locked in a kennel for 8 hrs. in her own urine and feces.

After refusing to let my cousin have her back, she threatened to take her anyways if we left her outside alone. My cousin finally stole her a few days ago. Of course, the police didn't do anything at all, except make everything worse. My cousin had actually beat me to the cops, and she told them that she had papers which gives her the right to take the pup from my own yard. The cops didn't even SEE the papers. They just took her word for it!! I don't understand how that's legal!! When I called them over here, they said it was a civil matter and had to be dealt with in court. I am so hurt by this...I don't know if Mattie is OK, if she's hurt, if she's hungry.. I just don't know.

I don't know where my cousin is, so how can court papers be served to her? They won't let me take her to court unless she's served. If anyone has any advice, please tell me. My heart is broken and I lost my only friend..but she's out there somewhere..

Thank you..

I would IMMEDEIATELY take her to a Small Claims Court, which requires no lawyers (it's like a Judge Judy case). You had a verbal ageement with her, and the fact you had the dog for 8 months gives you a very good chance at winning the case. I feel bad for the dog, now it's probably confused... anyway, I would definitely take her to court. This situation is in the dog's interest as well as yoursm and just because you're cousins shouldn't stop you from taking her to court. This situation obviously indicates her personality, and she doesn't sound like a "fit dog owner".

You might have a hard time because none of you have papers for the pup. In this case I would say that you need to have witnesses, just make sure someone will back you up in court. Good luck.

Your puppy must be so cute and pretty that your cousin stole it from you. Well, the best thing to do is to talk with your cousin and settle the problem.

You must confront your cousin. Talk to him and tell him you want your puppy back. I had never heard a situation like this before wherein someone stole a puppy. :D
