I know it is normal for puppies to chew things but I have seen a couple of adult dogs who continue to chew shoes, power cords, just about anything they can get in their mouths.

HOw can this habit be broken?

the idea is to change what they chew.
We had a baby that chewed cords, shoes dolls anything. so we went out and bought bones and rawhide. making chewig items that are good for t him available will keep his teeth happy and healthy and save your stuff.

Most of the time, dogs will chew thing and eat random stuff because they are not getting the attention they desire. This is a big problem...one that allot of humane societies wish they could educate people on. Solutions would be to get them plenty of chew toys and stuff to sink their teeth into. Along with this, use the chew toys when you play with them so they see the chew toys as a good thing, a thing of entertainment. Also, a bit further, give them reprimand when the chew a couch corner or a cord, Bring them to the "naughty deed" and show them, point to it, then "scold them"(to your own limit of course) like you would a kid. Now make sure that after you do this you let it sink in but also play with them when you are done with the behavioral correction maybe bring a chew toy out to have fun with them. This will help them understand what is for chewing and what is not. Also lets them know "Mommy gets mad when I chew that...but not this". To spend more time with them is also another way to curb this habit. Dogs need attention, just like kids. If you don't pay attention to them then they will find their own ways to be entertained. Not always the best ways of doing it. I understand people have jobs and other responsibilities in their life but your pet is also a responsibility that you need to attack with love and enthusiasm.
Not this post is not to say you are not doing your part or you don't love your pet. this is just a statement of the most common problems.
Something you can do is look on the internet about the habits and needs or your particular breed.
I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know what you find out and how you decide.

Be good to your pets, Aren't they good to you?
