Bernese Mountain Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

The Berner is a tri color dog of somewhat large size. The dog stands at around 23 to 27.5 inches or (58-70cm) at the withers. The Berner has no breed standards for weight however the dogs generally range between 65 and 120 pounds. The Berner is highly recognizable because of its tri-color pattern. The neck, body, legs, ears and head of the dog are solid black. The dogs thumbprints, stockings, and cheeks are a rust color or tan and the dogs chest, toes, muzzle, tail and tip are white. The pattern on the dog is very rigid and only varies slightly in the white. The eyes of the dog are almond shaped and dark brown. Female Bernese mountain dogs are considerably smaller in size than males and both males and females are very strong dogs.

Grooming

The Bernese mountain dogs coat is a bit rough in outline, but not harsh in texture. The undercoat of the dog is relatively dense, however the overall coat is very weather and dirt resistant. The dog could use a good brushing every week or two and it will be in very good shape, however not when the undercoat is being shed. At this point, a daily combing regimen may be necessary. Bernase Mountain Dogs will shed year around therefore drifts of fur should be expected.

Temperament

Bernese Mountain Dogs are avid outdoor dogs innately, however can be very well behaved in the house. The dogs do require a good amount of exercise and activity and do have a great deal of endurance. The Bernese Mountain Dogs have good bursts of speed for their large size when they are motivated. The dogs enjoy hiking and will stay close to their human companions.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a very strong breed of dog. The dogs are loyal, affectionate, stable, faithful and intelligent. Most of the Bernese Mountain Dogs are very friendly and social with other dogs and people. The Bernese Mountain Dog gets along very well with cats, horses, and other pets as well. These dogs are very trainable and with a patient owner. The Bernese does not respond very well to harsh treatment but will work very hard very treats. The breed overall is patient and loving and very stable in temperament.
