Mini Rex Rabbit

History

The Mini Rex is a tiny breed of rabbit which is famous for its unique plush velvet coat. The Mini Rex rabbit, also known as the "Velveteen Rabbit," has attained a lot of popularity since introduced. These bunnies are small, adorable and lovable with incredibly luxurious fur. They make great pets as they are quite friendly and are quite popular in shows.

The Mini Rex rabbit is derived from the rex breed. It has the fur of standard rex, but its size is smaller and its weight is about 3.5 to 4.5 pounds. They have good muscles with good hip and shoulder widths. The body of Mini Rex Rabbit is short and compact body. Instead of lying flat, their hair is protruding in outward direction from the body. They also have straight, thick ears that stand up and exceptionally curled whiskers.

The Mini Rex rabbit has a wide color spectrum including Black, Blue Eyed White, Blue, Castor, Broken Group, Chinchilla, Himalayan, Chocolate, Lilac, Opal, Lynx, Otter, Sable Point, Red, Seal, White and Tortoise. These are the colors that have been accepted till now, some other colors are soon to get approval by the American Rabbit Breeder's Association.

Popularity

Mini Rex Rabbits are undoubtedly the most popular breed of rabbits. They have a pretty friendly and cute personality and do well with children. The kids also adore them because of their tiny size and cuddliness. They are also pretty easy to handle, feed and house because of small size. They can be housed outside as well as inside in a proper cage. You can teach your Mini Rex to use a litter box.

The other attraction of this breed is their soft, plush like and velvety fur. This velvety texture of their fur might be due to the fact that their under fur is of the same length as the length of their guard hair. The texture of the soft fur is also partly due to the fact that their coat stands on its ends unlike other rabbits whose coats lie flat. Its coat springs back in an upright position even after patting. They also tend to have more amounts of fur then other types of rabbits.

The other reason why they are popular with breeders is that these cute rabbits do very well in shows. Being small in size they can be easily taken to shows. These rabbits come in a variety of colors and patterns. The average age of Mini Rex is around five to seven years though some of the species have seen their late teens. The Rex rabbits generally come in two sizes, mini and standard with multiple color variations.
