Hyla cinerea which we better know as American green tree frog is a beautiful green tree frog which is usually found in the south-eastern parts of America. It is usually seen in the shrubs which are found in southern Georgia, Florida, and Arkansas. The color of the American Tree Frog may either be light lime green or dark olive green and it may sometimes have a brown tinge but their bellies are creamy white. When a green tree frog shows variation in color it sometimes indicates the change of mood or it is camouflaging to hide from its enemy and it could also mean that it is ill or stressed.
The average size of a Green Tree Frog is about 2â€. Males are smaller in size than the females and can be differentiated as they have greenish yellow throat. The life span of a Green Tree Frog is 2-5 years. The Green Tree Frogs should be kept in a temperature that is between 20- 25 degree Celsius during summers and it should be slightly lowered during winters.
Their main food consists of cricket, moths and flies. An adult American Green frog will eat 2-3 crickets every alternate day. They should be kept in glass aquarium which is tall as well as has width as it is easy to clean as well as we can keep a watch on our pet. A top is an essential as it is needed for ventilation as well as safety of the frog.
American green frogs also eat fresh fruits and vegetables such as oranges, potatoes, apples, carrots and leafy green vegetables. In order to give a variation in taste moths, flies, mealworms, and wax worms can also be included in the diet. As wax worms have a very high fat content it should not be fed to the green tree frog in large quantity as it is not healthy for the frog. Mice called the pinky mice should be given only once a month to the green tree frog as it is very difficult to digest.
They reach their sexual maturity at the age of one that is when they start to give calls to the females. It keeps calling for about 20 seconds. Females on the other hand give short brief response call or a call of anger or distress when being bothered by another frog who sits on it.
The aquarium where the frog has been kept should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week which means everything that is inside the aquarium should be taken out and cleaned and dried properly before replacing it back. While doing all this the frog can be kept in a container.
