There are six sub-species of the Macaw Parrot, and their natural habitat includes South America, Central America, and Mexico. They were also present in the Caribbean at one point, but there are few there today. The Macaw Parrot favors the rainforests, but some species are also fond of woodlands or the savanna. There is no one feature common among all the Macaw Parrots which makes them distinct from other members of the Parrot family.

While they all have long tails, this feature is also seen among the Conure Parrot. One feature which can only be found with Macaw Parrots is the bare patch on their faces which surrounds their eyes and extends all the way to their beaks. One thing that many people notice when first encountering these birds is their size. The Macaw Parrot is one of the largest members of the parrot family. When it comes to wingspan and length, the Hyacinth Macaw is the largest. However, when it comes to weight, the biggest is the Buffon. While the other Macaw Parrots are quite large, they are much smaller than the Buffon or Hyacinth.

The smaller Macaw Parrot is the Red Shouldered Macaw. Like many members of the Parrot family, the Macaw Parrot will have both the first and fourth toe pointing in a backwards direction. Unfortunately, most Macaw Parrots are currently endangered, and there are six species which are already extinct. One of the most recent Macaw Parrots to become extinct is the Spix's Macaw. Another species which is probably extinct is the Glaucous Macaw. During the entire 20th century, only two sightings were made of it. There are two factors which have played a role in the extinction or near extinction of these birds, and this is deforestation and capturing and selling the birds illegally.

Like many birds within the Parrot family, the Macaw Parrot is fond of nuts and fruits. They also enjoy chewing on things. They are highly intelligent, and anyone who owns them will need to consistently provide them with intellectual stimulation. The lifespan of these birds is even more impressive than their size, since it has been said that the Macaw Parrot can live as long as 100 years. Despite this, on average, the birds will live about 50 years. These birds only bond with a single mate, and they will stay with this mate for the rest of their lives. When they are owned as pets, they will bond with the person that owns them.

Interaction is very important among Macaw Parrots, so important that they can suffer both mentally and physically without it. However, these birds can sometimes be difficult to deal with, and they may bite, scream, or pluck feathers. The plucking of feathers is something that is mostly seen by birds and captivity, and it is rarely seen in the wild.
