Afghan Hound Dogs and Puppies

The Afghan Hound developed unique features throughout the cold mountains of Afghanistan. During this period the dog was used to hunt foxes, wolves and gazelles. In Afghanistan the dog is called a Tazi (Persian: تازی). Other names for this dog breed include: Baluchi Hound, Balkh Hound, Kabul Hound, and Barutzy Hound.

Appearance

The Afghan Hound is a relatively tall dog as it can stand between 24 to 29 inches (63-74 cm) in height and the dog generally weighs between 45 to 60 pounds (20-30 kg). The coat of the Afghan hound may be any color, however white markings on the dog are discouraged. Many Afghan hounds have a black facial mask. Some Afghan hounds are almost white, however many hounds exhibit multiple colors. The fine textured, long coat, demands a good amount of grooming and care to be maintained properly.

Temperament

The temperament of the Afghan Hound can be dignified or conversely aloof, however the dog is generally clownish and happy when playing. The Afghan Hound has a very strong reputation among owners of being a relatively low obedience intelligence. The dog has many somewhat cat like tendencies and does not worship its master like other breeds of dogs. The Afghan Hound can be a very independent breed of dog. Many dogs will simply ignore commands. Afghan Hounds are rarely used for hunting in America and Europe where the dogs are popular. They are however popular show and coursing dogs.
