The American Kennel Club (AKC) has classified the Akita as a Working Group Dog breed, however several different dog breeds have contributed to the present Akita. Many dogs in its ancestry were fighting dog, some were hunting dogs. In fact the Akita was a Japanese Fighting Dog. The modern day Akita is far from a fighter and many breeders continue to breed out any aggressive tendencies. The modern Akita is very laid back, has an extremely good willed temperament which makes the Akita an excellent family pet in most family environments.
The Akita is a large breed. It is not a giant breed of dog and makes an exceptional house dog. The Akita only requires moderate exercise and is known to be an overall quiet dog unless given a reason to bark.
Akita's are very clean dogs that are easy to housebreak. They are odorless dogs and will respond very well to the necessary living conditions of family life. Akitas are also very passionate and devoted protectors of children and families alike. They are very gentle with children, however young children may be injured inadvertently do the dogs size and strength.
An Akita left alone or unattended with little socialization will become destructive. They are pack dogs and need some type of interaction whether human or other animal. The dogs can be stubborn therefore a firm yet caring hand may be needed in training.
