The Alaskan Malamute generally weighs between 75 to 85 pounds (34–38.5 kg) and has a general height of 23 to 25 inches (58–63.5 cm). Heavier dogs are found in the breed however these dogs are uncommon and not in accordance with the breed's history or show standards.
The Alaskan Malamute's coat is somewhat dense and more double northern dog coat, which is a bit harsher than the Siberian Husky. The general colors of the coat are shades of white and grey, white and sable and white and black. The eyes of the dog are always brown and are almond shaped, whereas blue eyes indicate some mixed breeding of the dog. The dog's physical breed is compact with strong heavy bones. Malamute's have a cork screw type tail which generally falls off to one side. This trait is thought to be evolutionary, because during periods of rests it uses its tail to blanket its nose when cold.

Some Malamutes are still being use as sled dogs for hauling freight, personal travel or assisting in moving heavy objects and some Malamutes are used for recreational mushing or sledding. Most Malamutes however are kept as show dogs or family. Generally speaking, the Malamutes cannot compete in dog sled races against the smaller faster breeds. The Malamute has not undergone changes during its breeding retaining its same form and function.
The dog's overly affectionate nature makes it a poor watch or guard dog. The Malamute may be tough to train however because of its long history of living in the wild. The Malamute is excellent with other animals, however in order to thrive needs a good amount of exercise.
The Malamute overall is very good with people and loyal to all members of the family especially after settling down post adulthood, however with every dog, it should be watched around children and small animals as each dog may vary.
Malamute's are very quiet dogs and do not bark often. Their vocalization is generally a very low bark, however they may howl like wolves at times and sound very similar. The Malamute must be socialized as a puppy and makes a great family pet.
