The one feature which makes these cats distinct is their stubby tail, which is one half the length of a standard cat tail. This type of tail results from a feline genetic mutation which alters the way in which the tail is developed, and the Manx is another cat breed which shares this characteristic. While the names may be similar, the American Bobtail is not a relative of the Japanese Bobtail. Not only are the breeding programs between these cats different, but the gene which causing the mutation is not the same.
The gene which gives the American Bobtail its distinct tail is a dominant gene. When it comes to body type, these cats are known for being quite sturdy, and they have long coats. However, the coat is shaggy rather than fluffy like many long haired cat breeds. When it comes to eye color, the American Bobtail can come with virtually any color. However, when it comes to showcase cats, it is preferred that the American Bobtail have a whil tabby look. Some urban legends have said that the American Bobtail is a result of breeding a regular tabby cat with a Bobcat.
While no one knows if there is any truth in this, what is known is that a brown tabby cat was bred with a female Siamese to give rise to the Bobtail bloodline. However, many of these original bloodlines have been removed. While it may be possible to breed a bobcat with a domestic housecat from a genetics point of view, the resulting male would likely be sterile. The genetics for the original appearance of the cat were altered within this breed so that a new and enhanced cat could be created that could come with a variety of colors, as well as categories. A number of shorthair variations are now present where only longhair cats were available in the past.
The newer lines have led to the introduction of a cat which has a much better disposition, as well as a wild look. While this breed has been in existence since the 1960s, it wasn't formerly recognized by the International Cat Association until 1989. This cat can compete in a number of cat associations, and this includes The Cat Fanciers Association. On a scale of 1 to 10, when it comes to the personality of this breed, it has been given a rating between 7 and 8. The American Bobtail is known for being playful, as well as friendly. When it comes to brain power, the Bobtail is highly intelligent.
Many have observed that these cats have a personality which is closely related to a dog. They enjoy playing fetch, and they are known for meeting their owners at the door. In addition to this, they are good with children, and don't mind being picked up by them.
