American Cocker Spaniels were noted as a distinct breed by the AKC in the early 1900s. In 1946 it was determined that there was a distinction between the American and the English Cocker Spaniel. These dogs are sporting or gun dog breeds and considered the smallest of their group. These dogs were utilized to expel prey and birds so the gunners could shoot them.

Appearance

The unique trait of the American Cocker Spaniel Dog is its expressive, dark eyes that resonate a loving, happy and active nature. Cocker Spaniels have pendulous ears, that hang down and a soft, silky, full feathered coat. When their show career is over, the coat is often cut to a shorter length. This is more beneficial to the dog in performance, as a companion or in hunting. It is necessary to clip the hair from both sides of the ear approximately one third down the ear flap in order to keep a sufficient amount of air flowing through and decrease the risk of infection or parasites.

On average, Cocker Spaniels weigh between 18 to 28 pounds. The ideal height of the dog is around 15 inches for males and 14 inches for females at the withers. Head size and bone size should be within proportion to the overall balance of the Cocker Spaniel.

Temperament

The Cocker Spaniels temperament is generally trusting and joyful. The ideal Spaniel is outgoing, merry and very eager to please everyone. The dogs are generally good with children as well as gentle and interactive with other pets. Cockers are most often a softer dog that does not enjoy harsh or rough training. These dogs are highly popular and there is a lot of irresponsibility in breeding the dog to keep up with its demand. As with all puppies, choose your breeders carefully as this will make a wonderful family dog.
