The American Foxhound's ideal height is about 21-25 inches (530-640 mm) tall to the withers, and the ideal weight is anywhere between 65-75 pounds (29-34 kg). The legs of the American Foxhound are very straight and long with solid bones. The chest of the dog is relatively narrow. The dog has a long muzzle, domed skull and large heard. The ears of the animal are low set and wide. The eyes are brown or hazel and are also large and wide set. the coat of the American Foxhound is harsh and short. Overall, the American Foxhound is very similar to the beagle, however is larger and stands taller.
The American Foxhound is kind, sweet, loyal and extremely loving at home. As with all dogs especially hounds constant and careful socialization and ample exercise are essential to the most success. A bored Foxhound will be very destructive and will scratch out doors, tear apart objects, etc. The American Foxhound is a very intelligent dog that is quick to learn, even how to open gates or jump small fences. The dog has a very strong hunting instinct and will follow scents blindly even into the street.
Foxhounds are great family dogs, however not great in apartment or small settings. The dogs get along very well with small and larger children, however should always be kept an eye on because they may claw or give a soft bite when they feel threatened.
Foxhounds make good watchdogs and will alert if a stranger is present. These dogs are not nuisance barkers, but can be quite loud when necessary. Don't expect the Foxhound to act like a retriever because the dogs are very independent by breeding. Most do not do well at following all commands. Training of the Foxhound can be difficult.
They cannot be expected to act like retrievers because, though affectionate, they are independent by nature. Although a few foxhounds have been trained in obedience, most will not follow commands unless it suits them. Training a foxhound can be a trying experience, training a retired foxhound that grew up in a Fox Hunt can be even worse, they can be stubborn and don’t respond to negative reinforcement well. The breed's lifespan is generally 10-13 years.
