The Australian Kelpie is a very successful herding bred of dog from Australia. The dog is capable of herding with no teaching or guidance. Kelpies come in a variety of colors and are medium sized dogs. Kelpies have been successful exported internationally and are primarily used for herding sheep and poultry.

In the United States of America, the Australian Kelpie is not recognized
In the USA, the Kelpie is currently not recognized as a breed by the AKC or American Kennel Club, which has set very high standards based on a dog's overall appearance. The North American Australian Kelpie Registry, which features the dog as a working breed, does not want the dog to be featured by the AKC.

Description

The differing varieties of coat and coloration types places the Kelpie in a very select group and it is not possible to look at an unmarked dog and classify the dog as a Kelpie.

Working Kelpies

Generally the Working Australian Kelpie comes in three distinct coat types, short, smooth and rough. The dog is almost in every color from black through cream or light tan. Many Working Kelpies have a solid white blaze throughout their chest.

Show Kelpies

Show Australian Kelpies are only in solid colors including chocolate, black, smokey blue, red, black, fawn and tan. The dogs have a short double coat and pricked ears. Show Kelpies are overall shorter and heavier than the Working Kelpie.

Temperament

Australian Kelpies are very friendly, loyal and intelligent dogs who enjoy problem solving. These dogs make excellent pets, however must be stimulated with activity and affection or they will become destructive. Simple socialization and walks is all that is necessary to keep the Kelpie content. Kelpies truly enjoy ball games and agility exercises. The dog is not an aggressive dog, however will bond to a family and defend the family vigorously.

The Working Kelpie is a high energy dog with an incredible amount of endurance. It can easily guide a pack of ship over forty miles in extreme conditions and climates. Kelpies are extremely hard working and agile dogs. They are very diligent and are excellent around children.
