Bassett Hound Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

The Basset Hound has an average height of 33 to 38 cm (13 to 15 inches) in at the withers. The hounds generally weigh between 50-70lbs. The Basset Hound has short haired, smooth coats, however rough haired hounds are possible. Any Basset Hound color is permissible per breeding standard.

The Bassett Hound has powerful necks, long, downward ears and a lot of loose skin around their heads that frequently forms wrinkles. The hounds tails are somewhat long and taper or stand upright with a curve. The tail is generally tipped in white. This feature made it easier to spot the Basset Hound while hunting or in deep brush and weeds. The excess skin on the face makes it look as the the hound is sad, and many people are charmed by this feature.

The Bassett Hound has short legs however is a somewhat large dog. The size of the dog is relatively deceiving and due to their length, they are able to reach things other dogs their height are not able to.

Temperament

The Basset Hound is a great companion and is a very calm breed of dog. The hound is very loyal and known for their emotional sensitivity and pleasant disposition. The Basset Hound is very friendly around strangers and always seeks an opportunity to make friends. This fact makes them an exceptional pet for families with young children and other pets. Bassets do well with good interaction, even if that interaction is with other pets. Surrounding a Basset with other pets also keeps the Basset Hound out of trouble. Bassets do not like to be alone. Bassets can get very excited when meeting new dogs or new people.

Due to the fact that it is a hound, Bassets are often difficult to train. They enjoy exercise and have a strong hunting instinct. If instructed, they will follow a trail. Bassets on known to howl when they want something or they seek some attention.
