Beagle Dogs and Puppies

Beagles are scent hounds primarily bred for tracking rabbit, hare and other game. The Beagle has a very keen tracking instinct and sense of smell that often has them commissioned as detection dogs for illegal agricultural foodstuffs and imports in customs quarantine throughout the world. Beagles are very popular as pets because of their even temper, size and lack of inherited health problems. These favorable characteristics also make the dog a first choice for animal testing.

Temperament

The Beagle has a gentle disposition and even temper. The dogs are often described as merry and amiable and they are not generally aggressive or timid. Beagles enjoy company and make an excellent pet, and although they may initially be stand offish with strangers the Beagles are easily won over. For this reason, Beagles make very poor guard dogs, however their tendency to give howl or bark when confronted with unfamiliar faces makes them good watch dogs.
