Bloodhound Dogs and Puppies

The Bloodhound is a scenthound, highly utilized for its ability to track a scent days and hours old over very long distances. The dog combines the acute sense of smell with an innately strong tracking instinct to make it the ideal trailing and tracking dog.

Appearance

Bloodhounds generally weigh from 80 to 110 lb (36 to 50 kg) and Bloodhounds generally stand 23 to 27 inches (58 to 69 cm) high at the withers. The acceptable colors for full grown Bloodhounds are black and tan, liver and tan, or red. Bloodhounds have a larger skeletal structure and most of their weight is within their thick bones. Their coat is hard and compact and composed of fur alone.

Temperament

This breed of dog is a cheerful, mellow, affectionate dog that is nonetheless tireless following a scent. Do to its strong tracking instinct, it can be very disobedient to train, however with the proper effort and time, good training can be achieved. Overall, the Bloodhound is gentle, affectionate, and even tempered making it an excellent pet for families, however due to its large size it should be supervised around small children because it may inadvertently knock them over. Their life expectancy is between 8 to 12 years.
