The Border Collie is very well known for its amiable temperament. The dog is very intelligent and has an innate ability to work very intensely and closely with a human master. The primary role of the Border Collie in the past has been as a working stock dog, however the Border Collie continues to increase in popularity as a pet. Utilizing their innate working genes, Border Collies are very energetic, demanding pets that thrive in environments where they have plenty of room to exercise and especially a job to perform. In a good home, with an active, dedicated owner, a Border Collie makes for an exceptional companion. Border Collies are also excellent competitors and excel in agility, sheepdog trials, dancing, tracking, disc, sled races and obedience drills.
Border Collies do not make great pets in environments where their is low activity. Additionally, Border Collies being innately geared to work may try to guide young children or other humans if not given the mental stimulation of the outdoors.
