Border Terrier Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

The Border Terrier is a dog with a double coat. The double coat consists of harsh, wiry outer coat and a soft undercoat. The colors of this dog include tan and grizzle, tan and blue, red grizzle, and wheaten. The Border Terrier coat should not be clipped but stripped by hand often, because the top coat will become shaggy and long and will eventually die and shed. Clipping a Border Terrier's coat around its back may ruin its coat and turn the hair curly and it may never return to its natural state. Some Border Terriers develop shaggy, long hair, however others keep a small coat throughout their lives.

Temperament

The Border Terrier is a smart, playful, energetic and friendly dog. The dog may make an excellent family pet because overall they are good with children. These dogs are best kept with other dogs of similar temperament if their owner cannot give them sufficient attention. Generally, when puppies, they jump around a lot and continue to be very affectionate through adulthood.

Training

The primary key to training a Border Terrier is to use care and compassion while being stern. With plenty of attention, these dogs can be easily trained. Consistency is very important when training a Border Terrier as the dogs have a good memory. As with all Terriers, it is necessary to establish dominance over this breed. The Border Terrier does not demand high levels of exercise but does enjoy good exercise sessions.

Borders do very well in various task related activities. They are successful in dog agility, obedience and serving as therapy dogs in various places. The Border Terrier needs attention and will engage in destructive behavior if left idle for long periods of time.
