Catalan Sheepdog Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

Catalan Sheepdogs are generally about 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) tall and generally weigh about 45 to 60 lb (20 to 27 kg) for males and the females are somewhat smaller. The dog's coat is long and either slightly wavy or flat. The color of the coat can be from a light to dark grey and fawn to dark sable. A nearly extinct breed of this dog is the shorthaired Catalan Sheepdog.

Temperament

The Catalan Sheepdog is an extremely smart dog and innately will guard and protect the sheep without any instruction front he farmer. Balancing this dog with sufficient outdoor activities will make them into a very well balanced and quiet home companion. The dog is great for families and children as well.

Health

The Catalan Sheepdog may be susceptible to hip dysplasia. The dogs generally live between 12 and 14 years.

Use

The Catalan Sheepdog makes an excellent companion however is generally used for herding. Due to its superior intelligence the Gos D'Atura, similar to most sheepdogs, these dogs are very easy to train. The dog is not only good at herding, however serves as a lively companion dog and will engage in all types of sports including agility. The dog also makes a good watchdog and is a great all around companion.

Trivia

* During the 1992 Olympics, a dog named Cobi was a Catalan Sheepdog.
