The Chinook dog is about 21 to 27 inches (53-69 cm) tall a the withers and the Chinook weighs between 55 to 90 pounds (25-41 kg). The Chinook is a very muscular and balanced dog. According to the UKC the ideal coat color of the dog is from reddish gold to light honey in color. Black markings within the inside corners of the eyes and black markings or dark tawny markings on the muzzle and ears are preferred. No white markings are permitted on the dog. The UKC disqualifies albinism. Ear carriage is variable on the dog, however dropped is preferred and the head of the dog is much more strongly rectangular as compared to various other sled dogs. The tail of the Chinook is a well furred saber. Generally, the Chinook appears to be more mastiff and less spitz in ancestry.
The Chinook dog is considered to be non-aggressive, calm and friendly, however will be very reserved with strangers. These dogs are innately very gentle with children and make for good family dogs.
Health issues associated with Chinooks include canine hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and some eye defects.
