Chow Chow Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

The Chow Chow is a very sturdily built dog which is square in profile with triangular, small ears that are rounded at the tip and a broad skull. The Chow Chow breed has a relatively dense coat that is either rough or smooth. The fur of the Chow is extremely thick around the neck showing as a distinctive mane or ruff. The coat of the Chow may be one of five colors: black, red, blue, cream, and / or cinnamon. Chows are also highly noted for their distinct blue black/ purple tongue and strong straight hind legs, leading to a very stilted gait.

Temperament

The modern Chow Chow is frequently kept as a companion dog. Chows can be very territorial over their homes and will take heed to all strangers who are unfamiliar to the dog. The Chow Chow can display aggression and timidity, however this is uncharacteristic of socialized well bred Chow Chows. The ideal Chow Chow owner will be equally stubborn and willful as the Chow he keeps. Therefore, it is highly advisable that weaker individuals would not be the ideal master over the Chow Chows. Chows of different sexes typically live with each other well and with less tension of those of the same sex, but it is not unheard of both sexes living peacefully in a home setting. Chow Chows are very loyal to their own family and will not be as affectionate and open to strangers. The typical Chow behavior is likened to a cat rather than a typical dog.

Chow Chows are generally not the most active breed of dog. Apartment life can suit this breed as the dog can be lazy. Chows are very intelligent despite their wistfulness and independence. Chows tend to be dominating, stubborn and at times disobedient, thus many trainers and pet professionals do not recommend Chows as a dog owners first pet.
