Corn snakes are creatures with mild temperament that can be easily bred under human captivity. Quite a favorite of snake lovers, these animals are creating quite an uproar in the genetic breeding industry where a number of experiments have been already conducted on them with great success.

The corn snake, (also known as the red rat snake) is the rat snake species of North America. It belongs to the elaphe genus and colubridae family. These snakes are known for their docile temperament (though it varies from snake to snake) that makes them quite favorable as pets. They rarely bite and mostly grow up to about four to six feet in length. Their life span covers about twenty years in average.

Corn sakes ( known so because of the Indian maize like pattern on their bodies or probably because of the fact that they can be often seen the corn fields, in search of a prey), prefer living in forest opening, on trees, overgrown fields, seldom used or abandoned farms or buildings. They are mostly found in areas that are well above the sea level (about six thousand feet above). Corn snakes are secretive creatures that come out during the twilight hours or at night. They are generally less active during the cold months.

Corn snakes were one of the first snakes that were kept as captives by the humans. This is owing to the fact that they are not dangerous (being non-venomous, and not having fangs), and have a very gentle nature. They are neither too large in size nor do they cause any problems while handling. Their low cost of maintenance and an attractive appearance makes them all the more sought after by the snake lovers. However, one trouble with them is that they are very good at escaping from their enclosures. So the keepers need to take extreme care of the fact the enclosures are well built.

Corn snakes feed on rodents that mostly include rats and mice. However, being the proficient climbers that they are, they might often go hunting for bats and other birds, on the trees. For the young ones, Carolina anoles and lizards are more suitable. Nevertheless these may also form a part of the adult diet. When breeding them in captivity, it is important to ensure that the snake gets clean water in a large dish so it can soak itself well into it. Clean bottled water is the best possible choice since they help to avoid any problems of digestion or dehydration.

Corn snakes are oviparous since the eggs are developed with the process of external fertilization. With the help of selective breeding techniques, a number of variations to this creature have been developed. This has made corn snakes not only all the more popular among the snake buyers, but has also created a lot of interest in the leather industry. With the scientists gaining better understanding of corn snakes and creating more and more varieties of these creatures, one thing is for sure, that is, corn snakes sure have a long way to go!
