The Costa Rican zebra tarantula, also known as striped knee tarantula (Aphonopelma seemanni), inhabits most of Costa Rica, as well as other parts of Central America, such as Guatemala and Nicaragua. It is black with white stripes near the joint.

Zebra tarantulas are burrowing tarantulas. They live in humid grasslands. Other sources claim it is a rainforest species.

Zebra tarantulas can grow to about 4-5 inches (10-13 cm) including legspan. They will live up to 20 years. Males however, will live a much shorter life of about 5 years. Other sources claim a life of only 13 and 3 years, respectively.

The zebra tarantula's diet consists of many insects. In the wild, they will eat insects such as cockroaches. In captivity they will eat crickets with no problem, the best to feed these animals is grub worms, they are high in calcium.

Housing:

A small (5-10 gallon) tank is suitable for Costa Rican Zebra Tarantulas. The width of the tank should be two to three times wider than the leg span of the spider wide, and only as tall as the spider's leg span. 3-4 inches of peat moss, soil, or vermiculite can be used as a substrate. Wood, cork bark, or half of a small clay flower pot can be used for a shelter/retreat.

Feeding:

Crickets and other large insects (must be pesticide free), occasional pinky mouse for larger spiders.
Temperament: Costa Rican Zebras are usually pretty docile, but they can move very fast.
