It is often considered to be related to the Pointer. The toes are well arched and the feet are compact and round. The Dalmatians ears taper toward the tip and are thin and set fairly hgih and carried close to the head.

The average Dalmatian stands between 19 and 24 inches (54-61 cm) at the withers and the average Dalmatian weighs from 45 to 70 pounds (20-32 kg) fully grown.

Coloring

The far most common colors for Dalmatians breeds are liver or block spots on an all white background. There are other colorations of Dalmatians including blue, lemon or orange and two toned however these are not considered as being pure bred Dalmatians.

Temperament

Dalmatians have a history as coach dogs, and therefore the Dalmatian breed needs plenty of exercise and may be very hyper. Dalmatians have excellent stamina are great runners and have self reliance. If given the opportunity to roam, a Dalmatian will embark on a multi day trip throughout the countryside, however in today's urban world the dogs must be contained because they will not survive this type of excursion. The Dalmatian's playful and energetic nature makes them a great companion for adults and children and they have an instinctive fondness for horses and humans. These strong traits make Dalmatians almost unbreakable by rough handling by children. As with most dogs, however it is necessary that the dogs be socialized with children while puppies and also important to to teach the children how to properly handle the Dalmatian. A Dalmatian is a powerful dog that can inadvertently injure a child during a play session.
