The Drever Dog is a European hunting hound with short legs that is also known as the Swedish Dachsbracke. Literally translated Drev is the Swedish word for hunt.

Appearance

Most breeds of dogs with nearly identical traits are commonly bred for a single purpose. The Drever however was bred to hunt both roe deer and hares. The dog is also used to hunt deer and fox. The Drever dogs body is similar in size to the common hunting hounds, however the Drever has relatively short legs. The tallest height of the Drever is 41cm, which is generally about 15 cm shorter than the average sized hunting hound.

Temperament

The Drever dog has plenty of energy and stamina. This dog is very popular as a hunting hound for deer hunters in Sweden and northern Norway. The hounds can move very slowly when hunting roe deer which are nervous quarry. Generally speaking, the Drever dog is a hunting hound and is not frequently found as a family or companion dog. The Drever dog is self possessed, independent and alert, however has an even and affable temperament. The dog is hardly ever shy or aggressive. In North America, the Drever is uncommon, however has been noted in Canada since 1956.

Origin

The Drever dog was originally bred in Sweden and combined thebeagle with the German Dachsbracke. It is classified as a scent hound. The Drever was first registered in the country of Sweden in 1913.
