Appearance

This breed of dog is generally has a massive body and a powerful build with a square head and a very broad skull. The overall size of the Mastiff is very large often giving a very powerful impression when viewed from any angle. The dog is very strong and can be quite loud under certain circumstances. The Mastiff's body is massive with great breadth and depth, especially between the forelegs and for this reason, the legs are spread wide apart.

The overall general weight of the Mastiff is 80 kg to 90 kg (175 to 200 lb) and the height of the dog is 27 inches to 32 inches (70 to 80 cm). According to the statistics of the American Kennel Club, the English Mastiff is one fo the heaviest dog breeds throughout the world.

The Mastiff's coat is relatively short and the color is usually silver-fawn, apricot, fawn or dark fawn brindle. The Mastiff always has black on its ears, muzzle and around the eyes.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists a Mastiff named Zorba from England as the heaviest dog ever in the world, weighing over 343lb, which would be roughly the size of a small donkey.

Temperament

The Mastiff was originally breed as a combination between dignity, grandeur, and courage. The Mastiff is generally very affectionate to its master, however makes a very effective guard dog. The Mastiff is calm, good natured, easygoing and for its size surprisingly gentle. The dog can be a well mannered house pet, but will need plenty of room to exercise. The English Mastiff is a very loyal breed, however not too headstrong. The dog is very good with children and fits in well with many families. Mastiffs may be very protective of their masters and family and must be handled carefully, because of their size they can be difficult to control. When a new visitor enters the home, the Master positions itself between its master and the visitor until the master gives an indication that the visitor is friendly.
