English Setter Dog and Puppies

Appearance

The English Setter is a sporting or gun dog. This breed of dog is bred for a mix of athletic skills and endurance. the coat of the English Setter is flat with a light feathering of somewhat long length. The dogs have a flowing, long coat that needs regular grooming. The various spotted coat colors of the English Setter are called belton which is a valid combination of black flecks on white or with orange flecks.

Temperament

The English Setter's overall temperament is good natured and friendly, however the dog can be mischievous and strong willed at times. English Setters are people oriented dogs with lots of energy. They are very well suited for families that have a lot of activity and attention to give the dogs. They also work very well with hunters who have jobs for them to perform. The dogs require plenty of outside activity because inside the dogs will become lower energy couch potatoes and lap dogs. Most of the dogs are very good around children.

The English Setter is a highly intelligent dog that can be trained to complete many tasks. The dog is not a herding dog however. The dog may not be easy to train, because their bird instinct will distract at many times. The dog has a very soft temperament and will react sharply to criticism. The best training technique with this dog is positive reinforcement.
