The smooth and wire haired Pinschers, as the German Pinscher and Standard Schnauzer were first called, were showcased in dog books around 1884. These dogs of a medium size are descendants from early European guardian and herding dogs and were categorically not related to the very similar terriers of Great Britain.
The German Pinscher is generally a medium sized dog and will weigh between 25-45 pounds and has a height of around 17-20 inches. The general colors for this breed of dog vary however are very similar to the closely related descendants including the Doberman and the Miniature Pinschers which include the colors tan and black, fawn red, and tan and blue. Only black and tan and solid red are considered acceptable FCI standards. As with most other dogs, breeders take great care to maintain these colors.
Several colors for this breed have become extinct throughout the wars of the twentieth century including salt and pepper and solid black.
The Gemran Pinscher is of a very strong willed and highly intelligent dog similar to the Miniature Pinscher. The dogs are generally very playful and friendly when socialized correctly, however great care should be given around young children as with every dog because of their strength and inadvertent ability to injure the child. German Pinschers must be parented lovingly but with consequence.
The German Pinscher is a very athletic and agile dog. This fact makes it a good sport dog in agility and obedience exercises. When properly trained the dogs are very vigilant in and around the house. German Pinschers enjoy the outdoors and have a less pronounced hunting instinct making for a great family dog.
