The Hyacinth Macaw is one of the largest members of the Parrot family, and it can be found naturally in the forests of South America.
Hyacinth Macaw

Despite its size, the parrot can fly, and the only Parrot which can rival it in terms of weight is the Kakapo. When it comes to length, there is no living Parrot that surpasses it. Because of their size, vibrant color, and markings, the Hyacinth is one of the most famous and sought after members of the Macaw family. Unfortunately, their popularity has led to their decline in the wild, and this has led to a steep asking price for those who wish to own one. A captive Hyacinth Macaw will generally start at around $9,000.

The Hyacinth can reach a maximum length of about 70 cm, and they can weigh as much as 1.7 kg. Their wingspan can be as long as 140 cm. Of all the birds, the Hyacinth has the strongest beak, and within a short period of time, they can make their way through the iron bars of a cage. This powerful beak allows the Hyacinth to eat the foods which it is fond of, and this includes nuts and hard seeds. The beaks of the Hyacinth are so strong that it is capable of cracking open Coconuts. They also enjoy the standard foods which parrots eat, such as vegetables and fruit. The Hyacinth also greatly enjoys pine nuts.

Palm plays an important role in the diet of these birds, and when they eat, they are known for making a mess. The plumage of this bird will be a solid blue, and the color of their feathers is very similar to the indigo. The beak is black in color, and bright yellow will be present on it as well. The lower part of the beak and the sides will also be yellow. The eyes of the Hyacinth are a solid dark color, and unlike many Parrots, it doesn't have a patch of skin which surrounds its eyes. Upon first glance, it is very difficult to tell the difference between a male and female Hyacinth. The female will typically be slightly more slender than the male.

The Hyacinth will nest in holes that it finds in trees. They can have as many as two eggs at a time, but more often than not, only one will survive. The baby Hyacinth will remain with its parents until it is a few months old. They won't start to mature until they are seven years old. There are three areas of South America where this bird can be found, and this is Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. While it is possible that the bird may be present in other areas of South America, it is these three areas where the bird is most prevalent. The bird enjoys both palm swamps and rain forests. Because of the desirability of these birds, they have become endangered. A number of groups, such as BioBrasil and the WWF, are working to protect these birds.
