Appearance

The perfect Terrier by breed standards is described as being racy, red and rectangular. Racy means that the dog must look powerful and not be sturdy or heavy. Rectangular means that the outline of the dog should differ from other terriers. This dogs body is somewhat longer than the body of the Fox Terrier, with racy lines. The tail of the Irish Terrier is usually docked soon after birth to about two thirds of the original length of the tail.

Characteristics

The Irish Terrier is a very energetic dog, but it is not considered to be hyperactive. The dog is very relaxed inside the house and can be motivated to a full activity interaction in short time.

These dogs are excellent with people as they love children, however do not permit much rough play. Many Irish Terrier owners do not suggest and Irish Terrier as an owners first dog. This is because as with most terriers, they need a firm hand from an authoritative person that does not use violence to be taught and socialized best.

Irish Terriers as with most terriers become dominant among other dogs and have problems with same sex aggression. Improperly socialized dogs will begin fights with with little or no provocation. Therefore early socialization is necessary. IRish Terriers can be good guard / watch dogs and will need a reason to bark.

The Irish Terrier can learn to do new things and is a very intelligent dog. Training of the dog is not very easy because the dogs are strong minded however these dogs have a willingness to please. It is suggested to look to the advice of an experienced Terrier trainer. The dog loves to be challenged physically and mentally and is a very active dog. These dogs excel in dog agility drills and make for excellent tracking dogs.
