The Newfoundland is a very large, generally black breed of dog that was breed as a working dog in Newfoundland. The Newfoundland is notable for its loyalty, amiable disposition and natural innate water rescue tendencies.

Appearance

Newfoundlands are often called Newfs or Newfies and have functional webbed feet and a durable water resistant coat. Male Newfoundlands weigh between 60–70 kg (130–150 lb), and female Newfoundlands weight between 45–55 kg (100–120 lb). This overall weight places the dog in the giant category for dog weights. Newfies have been recorded weighing over 90 kg (200 lb). The standard colors according to the American Kennel Club or AKC of the Newfoundland are gray, brwon landseer or black.

Temperament

The Newfoundland is almost always found to have an easy going amiable personality. The dog may have deep barks but rarely is angered by anything. Newfoundlands are very easy to train and serve as exceptional watchdogs, guard dogs and family dogs. Additionally, the Newfoundlands are very good with children, other dogs and families.
