Appearance

Over 2000 years old, the Pekingese toy dog breed has not changed at all, however today's breeders and show dog judges prefer the long haired Pekingese over the shorter hair spaniel type.

The most common color of the Pekingese is gold and this is the most dominant color of Pekingese. Albino Pekingese should be bred and cared for cautiously because their are numerous health problems associated with these animals. Pekingese generally weigh from 7 to 14 pounds (3-6 kg) and generally stand about 6-9 inches (15-23 cm) at the withers.

Temperament

Pekingese can be jealous and stubborn. Don't always expect a Pekie to come when called upon. The Pekingese can also be very aggressive especially to other dogs. In fact it often takes the Pekie's a long time to get used to other dogs. When properly socialized with people and dogs or other types of pets, they will be become friends. Sometimes their personalities are compared to a cat. Pekie's however are fiercely loyal and have been known to fight to the death for their master.

The Pekingese is often a one person dog. They generally do not work well with young or rambunctious children because the dogs do not enjoy rough play and can get injured easily. Though the Pekingese believes that it is a large dog, it is not and its master must constantly remind the dog of that.
