Pomeranian Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

Of the northern breeds of dogs, the Pomeranian is the smallest standing on average 3 to 7 lb (1.4 to 3.2 kg) according to the American Kennel Club, AKC standards.

The head of the dog resembles a wedge shape, making it resemble a fox in appearance. The ears of the Pomeranian are set high and very small. The dog's tail is very characteristic of the dog breed and is set high. When the pups are born, the tail does not spread out and make take many months to grow fully. The Pomeranian is small but very strong for its size.

The Pomeranian is often noted for its coat, in fact the dog has two coats; a top coat and an undercoat. The first coat is think, soft and fluffy and the undercoat is straight, long and coarse. The males shed their undercoat once a year and the females only shed their coat at times of stress or after delivering a litter.

Temperament

The Pomeranian is a very energetic, active dog that is courageous, intelligent and a very loyal companion. The Pomeranian is often not afraid of children and will often suffer abuse from children due to its small size. Poms are well suited for apartment life and enjoy walking.

Even for their size, Pomeranians make good watchdogs when properly trained. The dogs can be trained to do many things on command including bark.

Living in the city, Pomeranians will adapt and fit in ell, however the Pomeranian is also very happy on the countryside and still retains its strong innate instincts of hunting and survival.
