Poodle Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

Poodles come in a variety of colors including white, black, apricot, red, brown and silver. Poodles also appear in multi-colors or parti-color. Poodles were initially gun dogs adn may be still seen occasionally in that role. The body of the Poodle was shaved for less drag in water during hunting trips. Poodles have been extremely popular through Europe for several hundred years. The dogs are very skilled at many dog events including agility, herding, tracking and obedience.

Poodles are elegant dogs, often taking the top honors at many shows. The Poodle coat generally does not shed and is dense. As a result, these dogs required extensive grooming and care, however many pet Poodle owner keep their dogs in a much simpler, less frequent cut that is easier to care and calls for far less grooming.

The Poodle name was derived from the German word Pudel, which is abbreviated from Pudelhund. Literally translated to "splashing dog". Reflecting the former use of the Poodle as a retriever of water fowl and game.

Temperament

Poodles are very alert, intelligent and active dogs. The Poodle is arguably one of the most intelligent dogs and their history has found them in circuses performing throughout the world for years. Poodles have a very keeen instinctual behavior. In particular, hunting and marking drives are clearly more notable than most other breeds of dogs. Toy Poodles will even point out birds. Poodles can get bored easy, even though they are generally highly energetic, and have been known when bored to find mischief.
