The Rough Collie dog was originally developed for herding in and throughout Scotland. The dog is very well known do to the works of Albert Payson Terhune, an esteemed author and was highly popularized to later generations in the Lassie novels and on television.

The Rough Collie also has a Smooth coated variety, however many different organizations consider the two dogs to be variations of the same breed.

Appearance

All Collies are born in four basic colors: white and sable, generally the sable ranges from golden mahogany to a pale tan; tricolor, which is generally black edged in tan, white; and blue merle, which is generally a mottled gray color. All Collies have white coate regions, in parts of the leg, the collar and sometimes the tail tip. Some Collies have white blazes throughout their faces. Generally, rough Collies have more distinct pointed faces than their cousin by looks Shelties. The dog has long hair, however it is brushed daily, it will not be hard to keep in very good order.

The overall desired weight and size of the Rough Collie generally varies among the breed standards of the dog. Male Collies may stand 55.8 to 66 cm (22 to 26 in) at shoulder; the Female Collies average 5 cm (2 in) shorter. The male Rough Collie can weigh 20.4 to 34 kg (45 - 75 lb) and the female Rough Collie 5 to 10 pounds (2.3 - 4.5 kg) less.

Temperament

The Rough Collie is a friendly and intelligent dog that is passionate about work. The coat of the dog must be brushed often to keep it in a great condition, but it does not require additional care besides the daily brush. Rough Collie dogs are overall calm dogs, however can get very excited and charge you when requested. The size and weight of the dog makes them mid sized dogs and therefore these dogs are capable of living in small houses and apartments. The herding instinct of the Rough Collie is very alive in the breed. Generally these dogs are very protective and loyal to their owners and very good with children. Rough Collies make for very good family dogs.
