The Scottish terrier originated in Scotland as one of five breeds of Terrier. The four other breeds of terrier are Cairn, Skye, West Highland White Terriers and Dandie Dinmont. The Scottish Terrier is frequently called the Little Diehard, which it was named by the fourth Earl of Dumbarton, George in the 19th century.

Appearance

Though a Scottish Terrier is diminutive in size, it makes up for it in resilience. The Scottie is a muscular and fast dog with a good size neck. It's body makes it seem broad chested for its compact, short legged, yet sturdily built size.

Generally the Scottie has large paws for digging and also has an erect tail and erect ears. Their eyes are bright, small, and almond shaped in a black or dark brown color.

The height of the Scottie can be about ten inches for both sexes of the dog, and a well bred Scottish Terrier will weigh between 19-22 pounds for a male and 18-21 pounds for a female.

The coat of the Scottish Terrier is wiry, hard and long with some what of water resistant features. The coat should be blended and trimmed with the longer coat on the eyebrows, beard, legs and lower body, so the dog appears a bit shaggy. Scotties are generally jet black to dark grey in color.

Temperament

Scottish terriers are quick, alert and feisty dogs similar to most terriers and perhaps even move than other terrier breeds. The Scottie is generally a self assured, independent, intelligent and playful dog that is determined to achieve anything it tries to do. The Scottie is a very loyal dog. The Scottie can be very stubborn, though loving, therefore when socialization it is necessary to have a gentle yet firm hand or it will attempt to control the household. Scotties also can be very sensitive.

The Scottie makes an excellent small watch dog, because it will bark when necessary and is not initially accepting of strangers, though all dogs do differ. The Scottie is also a fearless dog and may be aggressive to everything even dogs much larger. Scotties are also avid diggers and will nnt mice, squirrels and foxes if able, therefore always walk your Scottie on a lease.
