The Chinese Shar Pei originated in China as a non sporting, utility dog breed. The Shar Pei has distinctive features including a blue black tongue and deep wrinkles. The name of the dog is 沙皮, pinyin: shā pí; whereas the English Shar Pei is derived from the Cantonese equivalent sā pèih. Directly translated it means "sand skin," and refers to dog's texture of its rough, short, coat.

Shar Peis, as puppies have numerous wrinkles, however as they mature, the numerous wrinkles disappear as they grow into the skin. Shar Pei's were once named by the Guiness Book of World Records and Time magazine as one of the world's rarest dog breeds.

Appearance

Shar Pei's are naturally available in a variety of colors: sand, red (rose), black, cream, and blue and have a very similar distinguishing blue black tongue similar to the Chow Chow. Loose wrinkles and skin cover the neck, head, and body of puppies, however adult Shar Pei will grow into their skin and the wrinkles become limited to the neck and head. However a breed of the Shar Pei can be covered with large folds of wrinkles through adulthood, however most have tighter skin in adulthood. The dogs also have characteristic triangular, small ears, a stout muzzle and a highly set tail. Truly a unique dog.

Temperament

The Shar Pei is well known as a reserved and independent dog breed. Shar Peis are most often very suspicious of strangers, which is often thought to be related to their beginnings as guard dogs. Nevertheless, the Shar Pei is an extremely loyal, devoted and affectionate addition to a family when raised right and will be very amenable to strangers if given the proper introduction and time. When poorly trained or socialized, the Shar Pei can become aggressive or territorial. Even well trained and socialized breeds can be quite territorial as the dog retains its innate watchdog abilities. The Shar Pei is very amenable to training, however often gets bored from repetition. Overall, the Shar Pei is a loving and loyal dog to its family while being more independent than some of the other breeds.
