
The Smooth Collie dog is considered a large dog because it ranges in size from 20-26 inches to the shoulders of the dog and weighing about 40-75 pounds fully grown. Standard size fo the dog breed is generally on the larger end of the approximate in Canada and the United States, however smaller elsewhere throughout the world. The male Rough Collie is always generally quite larger than the females.
The Smooth Collie Dog is generally longer than it is tall and has a deep chest with a level back. The overall features of the head of the dog are overall considered significantly important in the high end show ring. The breed of doghas a flat skull, long muzzle and semi-erect ears.
The coat of the dog is generally soft and has an extremely dense straight undercoat with somewhat harsh outer guard hairs. The guard hairs range about one to two inches long, with the longer hair of the coat of the dog mainly in a ruff throughout the neck region as well as on the backs of the thighs. The coat of this dog requires a very thorough daily or at the least weekly brushing. The dogs shedding is moderate throughout the year and somewhat heavy during the shedding season which happens twice per year.
Generally, Smooth Collie dogs come in four distinct colors which are overall considered acceptable standard dog colors worldwide. The overall acceptable colors of the dog overall are sable which is similar to Lassie's color, this can be light gold to a darker mahogany. Colors are also tricolor, black with white and tan markings, blue merle which is black with silvery gray marbled markings or blue merle which is silvery gray marbled with tan or black markings. All of these dog types are marked with white distinct areas on the chest, feet/legs, neck and tail tip.
The Smooth Collie dog is overall a easily trained, sociable family dog. The breed is not aggressive, however is very vocal and alert. This fact makes them very good watchdogs when well trained which is not difficult. They can be potential nuisances if not trained properly and will bark indiscriminately. The Smooth Collie needs plenty of attention and affection and is generally not for the inexperienced or first time dog owner. Training the Smooth Collie demands a light but firm touch, as the dog is sensitive to most correction and will be very timid under harsh treatment. The Smooth Collie works very well with children and other animals as well as getting along well with other dogs. Smooth Collies are frequently used as pets in families and in various types of competitions including herding trials, agility, competition and other dog sports. Many Smooth Collies are still very useful as working sheepdogs and assistance dogs for the handicapped. Generally these dogs appreciate small animals because they get quite lonely at times.
