The Standard Schnauzer is the primary breed of the three different size breeds of Schnauzer dogs. The dog is not related to the British terriers despite the general appearance and wiry coat.

The dog's origins however are in old guard dog and herding breeds of Europe. Thee Schnauzer is squarely built, fairly robust, and of medium size. The dog was considered of the aristocracy and was a favorite of many painters including Rembrandt and Albecht Durer.

Appearance

The Standard Schnauzer has a wiry and harsh outer coat with very little shedding. The color is sometimes black however more often a salt and pepper. The hair on the face of the Schnauzer grows to form eyebrows and a pronounced beard. This dog breed is sturdy and robust and is somewhat heavy for its height with solid bones and muscles. The ideal weight and height for these dogs ranges between 18 and 20 inches for males in height and about 35 to 50 pounds. Whereas the female dogs are between 17 and 19 inches tall and weigh between 30-45 pounds. Though the ears historically were cropped and the tails docked, presently, many countries in Europe and Australia have banned these practices. In the United States nearly all dogs have docked tails and many are cropped.

Temperament

The Standard Schnauzer is a highly intelligent and social dog. Schnauzers can be playful, ardent guards and exceptional family dogs. When the dogs are properly raised and trained, the Schnauzer makes for a loyal companion with children. The Schnauzer is a very energetic breed that thrives on close interaction with all family events. Thus, these dogs are best fit with an active family with older children, however they do get along very well with young children. The dogs can be mischievous if not given enough attention. Overall they are not barkers, however have a good bark that is very useful as a guard dog. These dogs are very devoted and loyal protectors of their human families.

The Standard Schnauzer will take time to warm up to strangers. The dogs learn relatively quickly however can become bored with repetition. The dogs can be stubborn and do not respond well to harsh actions. Schnauzers have great hunting instincts and will retrieve items in water or on land. These dogs are exceptional herders of cattle and sheep, which goes back to their general purpose as a farm dog.
