Welsh Springer Spaniel Dogs and Puppies

Appearance

The general appearance of the Welsh Spring Spaniel ideally should be a little off square. This means that the length of the Welsh Springer should be a little greater than the height at the withers of the dog. Some Welsh Springer Spaniels, may be square, which does not penalize them at show. Some countries dock the tail and remove the dew claws of the dog.

The eyes of the Welsh Springer Spaniel should be brown, yellow may occur but is not acceptable for show. The ears of the dog are lightly feathered and pendulous. A scissors bite is preferred and nostrils must be black or a shade of brown as pink will be penalized in the show ring.

* Height of dog at withers:

Male: 18-19 inches (46 to 48 cm
Female: 17-18 inches (43 to 46 cm)

* Weight:

35 to 45 lb (16 to 20 kg)

The coat of the dog is naturally flat, straight and very soft to the touch. The coat should never be wavy or wiry. The dogs coat is highly weatherproof and provides excellent weather protection from brush and thorns. The back legs of the dog and under side are feathered and the tail and ears are feathered.

Temperament

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a loyal, active and very affectionate breed of dog. Some of these animals might be shy with strangers, however will break that shortly and not be timid or unfriendly. The breed overall is very affectionate to all members of the household and plays very well with children. Additionally, the dog will accept other pets openly. Often called velcro dogs, the breed can be very clingy.

The dog can be a quick learner, however will ignore commands when stimulated by other things in their environment. Raised properly, these dogs are extremely obedient.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel was bred for endurance and solid work. Therefore, this dog needs consistent exercise to remain content and healthy. With the absence of adequate exercise, the dog will be bored and become destructive in order to keep busy.
