Hello, Tough! What a night. One of my residents is in the hospital and I have been sitting with him there. Alzhimers patents are a handfull to begin with but he is 3rd stage which makes him more of a challenge. I don't want to go that way.

Yes you are lucky! But someone has to do it. Alzhimers is an incideous disease. It strikes down some of the best minds. Last night went something like this: Mr.H, put your cloths back on! Mr.H, you have to leave your heart monitor on. No, you can't get up. Let me help you put your cloths back on. Doesn't dry cloths feel better! Over and over, all night long. I will be glad to have him back on the unit and back to normal.

l thought when an old person gets alzhimers than its not to far before they die is that true

It depends, It can take as long as 10 years from stage one to stage three. There are some drugs which can slow it down a little but it all depends on the person. Once they reach stage three, it does not take long. The sezures and other related complications take their toll. Then there is the real threat from choaking because they forget how to swallow. Liquid thickners and mechanical diets help some but you can't leave them alone with food by that time. But in the end it is always the same. I hope I live long enough to see a cure found. Every cell in the body is regenerated every ten years. That means you get a new face (bones included) but the body is making copies of copies and after a while the copies start to degenerate, that is why we wrinkle and look older. It is also what happens to the brain. Every time a hole in the brain is copied it gets larger and that is what we call dementia. Alzhimers is a form of dementia and the worst.
